Big Magic book review

Doing book reviews can sometimes be hard especially when you have to summarize 276 pages to one blog post. But if there are conversations that leave me feeling really happy and inspired talking about books is definitely one of them. I get to connect with like minded people through books so its something I will definitely keep sharing.

I had different thoughts reading through this one but at the end I am motivated and brought to understand a number of things.

Big Magic book review
REVIEW:

Q: What is creativity?

A: The relationship between a human being and the mysteries of inspiration.

In this book Elizabeth Gilbert is one of those friends we all need who just pushes you to go ahead and create or work regardless. A self help book artistically written by some one with first hand experience. Being the novelist she is, she brings out her imagination but also uses other people’s stories and her own experiences to send her message making it somehow relatable.

what are you passionate enough about that you can endure the most disagreeable aspects of the work?

Divided in 6 parts namely, Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust and Divinity she covers all aspect of a creative’s life. She highlights all stages of bringing something to excistence from the idea to the final product and on how to conquer all set backs along the way.

The feeling of desperation and unhappiness are more useful to an artist than the feeling of contentment, because desperation and unhappiness stretch your whole sensibility.

On one of those parts she explains about her understanding on ownership of an idea, how you can wake up one day to find some else implemented the same idea you have been procrastinating about for a long time, so logic. She says ” I believe that inspiration will always try its best to work with you — but if you are not ready or available , it may indeed choose to leave you and search for a different human collaborator” she says when this happens instead of getting angry and accusing someone else sometimes people you haven’t even met before for stealing your idea, stay positive and next time work on an idea like a maniac.

She also highlights on how as artists one of your works may raise the standard really high that you fear coming up with something else but just do it anyways because at the end of the day you have to keep creating.

Simply and wittily written makes it easy to read. This book is not solely for artists and “career creatives” but for anyone willing to conquer self doubt, fear and follow the path they wish to take.

I would recommend it to : Start up owners, aspiring and established entrepreneurs, career creatives, digital influencers, bloggers and those looking to courageously step up their game and leave fear behind.

I am also looking for books to add to my reading list, Please leave me your suggestions on the comment section below. 🙂

Leaving you with some quotes from this book, thank you for dropping by.xx

I kept working. I kept writing. I kept not getting published, but that was okay, because I was getting educated.

You might spend your whole life following your curiosity and have absolutely nothing to show for it at the end except one thing. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you passed your entire existence in devotion to the noble human virtue of inquisitiveness.

And that should be more than enough for anyone to say that they lived a rich and splendid life.

Piece from broken pieces book

First time I heard about this book was when I saw a youtube video where Iyanla her self spoke about it.It was back is 2012 when I added it to my reading list just because – it was a personal development book that helped someone get through a hard time in her life.

This year,my urge to read this book increased after remembering that Iyanla spoke about this book mostly on how its based on her life after loosing her daughter. Gemmia,Iyanla’s daughter would be another main character if this was a movie.

Act like a success book and the jar.

Act like a success book and the jar.

Ladies and gentlemen here is  act like a success think like a success.I found out about this book after watching this video on YouTube where Steve Harvey briefly talks about it and that very moment I told my self – this is a must read.

About the book: In this book Steve shares bits of his journey from the day he walked up to his boss and told him he was quitting his job to follow his dreams, walks you through his challenges while giving you a step by step guide to success to the days of being flown in private jets to perform in shows without having to compromise his morals and values along the way.

In this book Steve also covers how you can transfer your gift to other aspects of life like God, family, and community engagement. This is not one of those succeed fast books making it sound like a smooth ride,it highlights the challenges you will meet on the way like fear, rejection e.t.c and how you can overcome them.

and this one

Why you should read this book: Mr.Harvey brings in his charisma and uses his personal experiences to clarify his message which makes it relatable. It is a reminder on the gift and uniqueness we are all gifted with and how that can transform our lives.Written clearly with simplicity makes it easy to read. And one of the things I liked about reading this book is how he uses examples from present time which also makes it more relatable.

book and jar

And Here is a simple fun tip:

Do you have a lot of books and do not know which one to begin with?If you do not have a TRL (To Read List) just use this simple book jar method. Get a clean jar and label it the book jar and cut out colourful papers, write book tittle on them and drop them in the jar.Now make the choice by jiggling the book jar and pick a paper, there is your next book.Enjoy reading :).

Do less get more (Book)

Do less get more (Book)

I just finished reading this book and I am currently reading two book, one is a history book and the other is on beauty.I have been staying up late reading instead of going from one youtube video to another like I had been doing recently.

I promised to give away a book on Instagram on a previous post  and it happened. It was the Hero book by Rhonda Byrnes.I met the winner at Mbalamwezi this past weekend and we had an awesome evening. She is such a nice person and very optimistic.Thank you Kadija!

This book “Do less Get more – Sháá Wasmund ” is a self help book to help you stay organized and be more efficient without being stuck on being busy.

It covers on things like time management, how to stop saying yes to everything, prioritizing, nurturing your support system, finding time for your loved ones and hobbies and a lot more.

Having read a number of self help books this was more like a reminder on similar things.I would suggest this book if you feel like there is so much going on in your life with very little time on your hand and if you feel you need to be more efficient and organized with your life enabling you to achieve the best results without procrastinating and being stuck in the busy trap.

Here are some pages from the book:
