Big Magic book review

Doing book reviews can sometimes be hard especially when you have to summarize 276 pages to one blog post. But if there are conversations that leave me feeling really happy and inspired talking about books is definitely one of them. I get to connect with like minded people through books so its something I will definitely keep sharing.

I had different thoughts reading through this one but at the end I am motivated and brought to understand a number of things.

Big Magic book review

Q: What is creativity?

A: The relationship between a human being and the mysteries of inspiration.

In this book Elizabeth Gilbert is one of those friends we all need who just pushes you to go ahead and create or work regardless. A self help book artistically written by some one with first hand experience. Being the novelist she is, she brings out her imagination but also uses other people’s stories and her own experiences to send her message making it somehow relatable.

what are you passionate enough about that you can endure the most disagreeable aspects of the work?

Divided in 6 parts namely, Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust and Divinity she covers all aspect of a creative’s life. She highlights all stages of bringing something to excistence from the idea to the final product and on how to conquer all set backs along the way.

The feeling of desperation and unhappiness are more useful to an artist than the feeling of contentment, because desperation and unhappiness stretch your whole sensibility.

On one of those parts she explains about her understanding on ownership of an idea, how you can wake up one day to find some else implemented the same idea you have been procrastinating about for a long time, so logic. She says ” I believe that inspiration will always try its best to work with you — but if you are not ready or available , it may indeed choose to leave you and search for a different human collaborator” she says when this happens instead of getting angry and accusing someone else sometimes people you haven’t even met before for stealing your idea, stay positive and next time work on an idea like a maniac.

She also highlights on how as artists one of your works may raise the standard really high that you fear coming up with something else but just do it anyways because at the end of the day you have to keep creating.

Simply and wittily written makes it easy to read. This book is not solely for artists and “career creatives” but for anyone willing to conquer self doubt, fear and follow the path they wish to take.

I would recommend it to : Start up owners, aspiring and established entrepreneurs, career creatives, digital influencers, bloggers and those looking to courageously step up their game and leave fear behind.

I am also looking for books to add to my reading list, Please leave me your suggestions on the comment section below. 🙂

Leaving you with some quotes from this book, thank you for dropping by.xx

I kept working. I kept writing. I kept not getting published, but that was okay, because I was getting educated.

You might spend your whole life following your curiosity and have absolutely nothing to show for it at the end except one thing. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you passed your entire existence in devotion to the noble human virtue of inquisitiveness.

And that should be more than enough for anyone to say that they lived a rich and splendid life.
